Hounds of Hell?? and the Sound of Breaking Glass
by
Nefer Khepri Hemet
If you have ever experienced the sound of breaking glass and have gone to investigate only to find that nothing was broken and there was no sign of anything being disturbed, then you are not alone. As of yet I have no way to explain this phenomena. Recently, a number of clients have mentioned experiencing this and it brought to mind something that happened to me while still in high school.
There are two phenomena involved in this experience. As of yet I do not know if there is any relation between the two. Since then, I have experienced both phenomena a number of times, but never on the same day as in this experience I am about to share with you.
If anyone out there has done any research on the breaking glass phenomena or has any ideas as to what causes it or what it may mean, please contact me. I'm interested in hearing from you.
And now, on to the story ...
Mimi and I were on a walk one summer evening around my neighborhood. As we approached a very familiar intersection three blocks from my house the sky seemed to suddenly cloud over. It got fairly dark and we both thought it was about to rain.
Instead, I saw the sudden appearance of 2 red dots on the corner directly across the street from us. Then another pair of red dots appeared on each of the other corners as we approached our own corner. I thought they were reflector lights sometimes put at intersections that have no street lights, as this one did. However, Mimi noted the lights were blinking. Reflector lights do not do this as they are placed there simply to gather a car's light to warn of an intersection. I noted how these red dots were blinking like eyes. Suddenly, we heard a chorus of growls. The lights moved. Suddenly, the moon came out from behind a cloud and we were faced with what we assumed were three Rotweillers, each standing on a corner. The only corner free of a dog was the one we were heading towards.
We were so close to the corner that I suggested we walk calmly towards it, then turn toward my house and walk as if nothing was wrong. Hopefully the dogs would not follow us. As we turned we heard more growling and the sound of large paws hitting concrete. The dogs were on the move.
I turned to look and all three were now on the sidewalk about 20 feet behind us. It was late and none of the houses were lit, so it appeared as though no one was home on the entire block. Our only hope was to run the 2 block stretch to the street on which my house was located. There was busy traffic there and I hoped that at least someone would come out of their car to help us if the dogs attacked.
Somehow we made it with the dogs hot on our heels. We made it all the way to my house and ran in the side door just as the dogs came running up the driveway behind us. As they ran past us we saw them disappear in mid-air toward the back of my parents' property.
Despite being safely in my house we were about to discover that our frightening evening was not yet over. I have experienced the phenomenon of breaking glass several times in my life, and on this night it was a SHARED experience between myself and my friend, Mimi.
We dashed up my driveway and into the side door, never looking behind to see if the Devil Dogs as they became known, were behind us or not. Mimi slammed the door shut and locked it. We were both near tears as we began climbing the steps to my kitchen.
Dad had left an expensive vase on one of the steps, I guess because he was carrying other stuff in and then he simply forgot it. My friend said, "oh, you'd better bring that vase in before someone knocks it ..." and suddenly the vase began to fall down the steps! I was closest so I reached for it, meaning to encompass it in my arms. It fell right THROUGH my arms. I saw it. My friend saw it. The vase hit the landing below with a resounding CRASH, spraying shards of glass everywhere, even back up on the steps where we were still standing. Since my friend was barefoot I said, "don't move! Let me get a broom!" I ran in, grabbed the broom from the utility closet right next to the stairway.
As I turned to go back
to the stairs I heard my friend gasp. I looked down. There was no
glass anywhere!!!!!!!! And there was NO VASE either!!!!! We ran in
the house screaming at my parents who thought we'd both gone completely mad.
To this day, I cannot explain this. I have heard the sound of breaking glass several times since then, but never accompanied by a hallucination or anything. It may originate from another dimension, I don't know.
Oh, and that vase we saw? We both drew pictures of it independently from one another. The pictures were identical. My parents did not have one like it, nor had they ever seen one. It was black glass with white little knobs all over it. Very pretty.
Years later, when we were both in grad school, Mimi called me quite excited. She had just gotten home for summer break and was amazed to see sitting on her mother's mantle the same vase we saw break at my house nearly a decade earlier.
