Raised an only child, I had many interests, most of which centered around spirituality and archaeology. I began reading tarot cards at the age of 14. My mother is very open-minded and had taken a class on reading the cards. However, she couldn't do it so in frustration she threw her cards and the book in the garbage. As Fate would have it, I needed to throw something out immediately after she threw out her cards. As I leaned over to put my trash in the garbage can I saw all these brightly colored cards looking up at me. I asked Mom what they were and I'll never forget what she said, "Oh, just some dumb cards that are supposed to tell your future, but they don't work." I asked if I could have them, she laughed & said, "sure!" And, as they say, the rest is history.
Due to my interests in the spirituality of ancient cultures I went to college for 12 years gathering degrees from Northwestern University (in Evanston, IL.), the University of California at Santa Barbara, and the University of Texas at Austin. I received my BA and MA in Anthropology with an emphasis on Archaeology. My specialty became further defined when I began my doctoral studies in Austin. There, I specialized in the art, religion, and socio-political organization of the ancient Mayan civilization. I received my doctorate in Latin American Studies in 1994.
In the fall of 1993 I met my husband while attending a non-denominational church in Austin, Texas. We began dating in October and were married the following May, just before my graduation.
Shortly after graduation my husband moved us from Austin to the Gulf Coast area of Texas where we now reside. Upon moving here I was told repeatedly I was over-qualified for teaching jobs here. Dismayed and depressed, I began looking elsewhere. Eventually, I fell into a job at a metaphysical store. This was a far cry from my original goal of teaching college students about the Mayan civilization. However, I found I was very happy where I was & I was very thankful for the job. Not only did I meet many interesting people from whom I learned a great deal, but I realized that my life-long interest in spiritual things had finally brought me full circle. During my job at this shop I grew spiritually as I was introduced to reiki, a method of healing. I received my attunements up to the Master level before leaving the shop to begin my own small business out of my home in mid-December, 1997. On Beltane, April 30, 1999 - the tenth anniversary of my dedication to the Goddess and the God - I received my master teacher attunement in reiki so now I am able to attune others to reiki.
Since 1997, I have been working at home building up my business, Magical Musings. I give tarot readings, reiki sessions, and I plan to offer classes in e-mail on a wide variety of metaphysical subjects. I also do visionary artwork in oil pastel, colored pencils, and other artistic mediums. Locally, there is now great interest in my soul portraits. I do all this while taking care of a new house we purchased in February, 2003, our 9-year-old daughter, a great husband who is a born-again southern baptist banker who calls what I do my "witchy-poo" stuff, my wonderful cat & magical familiar, Dickens, and the latest addition to our family, Sheila, our Australian Red Heeler.
I really love what I do. Not only is it fun, but my original interests that seemed so far removed from everyday life have become my everyday life. Never in my wildest dreams did I envision myself making a living doing such things as reading cards, teaching people how to connect with their guides & angels, and ghost busting! It is a great joy to be able to help people and to provide a valuable service to them. I have seen great results among my clients and I hope, in time, you and I will see the same great results in your life!
